Chapter 11

Eliza didn’t remember ever feeling so awful. Not even when she almost overdosed. Her head was heavy, and her body numb. She tried to take deep breaths but was too weak for that. She had no idea how long it took, but with great effort, she managed to open her eyes.

Everything was blurred, and it didn’t change even if she blinked or narrowed her eyes. The thought of using her powers crossed her mind, but she gave up at once. There was no way she could even try.

Once she got used to the light and managed to distinguish a few shapes, she realized she wasn’t in her room. An unknown ceiling, Eliza thought through her groggy mind, remembering one of those Japanese animation movies she had watched with Bianca a long time ago. Despite feeling sluggish, she couldn’t help but chuckle.

As she remained still, her vision came a little into focus, and she looked around. Even blurred, she didn’t recognize anything but could tell there was a strange beeping machine next to her. Oh yeah, mom brought me to the hospital.

Eliza had some idea of what happened after she collapsed in the bathroom. She was coming in and out of consciousness when her mother found her lying with all the painkillers spread around her. She had vague memories of the ambulance, the loud siren, and the crying and praying.

A shot of pain crossed her body when she shuddered; she had overheard her mother talking to a shrink and their priest about Eliza trying to kill herself. At least this served for something, she thought, gently touching her belly. When she regained consciousness for a while, she was in the ER and about to have her stomach pumped.

Thank God I fainted before. I never imagined I’d have to go through that again. At least they stopped with the suicidal talk when they realized I hadn’t taken any painkiller. Too bad I have to come up with some excuse for why I was in their bathroom and with painkillers on the floor around me. If I hadn’t dropped the bottle… Ah, screw it. What’s done is done, Eliza told herself, closing her eyes and drifting into sleep.

She woke a few hours later when she needed to use the bathroom. She had to use all the strength she could gather at the moment just to get out of bed. Everything was still blurred, so she touched her way to the bathroom slowly, dragging the IV hooked to her. After they had taken the content of her stomach, she had tried to eat the next time she was up, but solid food was impossible. Wished I didn’t need this. I’m so hungry…

After she washed her hands, she looked at herself in the mirror. Even blurred, she could see how terrible she looked. I didn’t think I’d feel this bad for overusing my powers. And somehow, I was lucky. According to the doctor, her eye pressure was so high they thought she had glaucoma or something.
